Antae dreams big

Aug 07 2019

Antae Vidakovic may only be 12 years old, but he is well on his way to achieving his dream of becoming a mechanic, fixing aircrafts and tanks in the military.

To help realise his dream, the Browns Plains local has been developing his confidence and using his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports since December 2018.

According to his mum Maria, Antae is the happiest he has ever been.

“He is becoming more confident and positive about who he is and the possibilities about who he can become,” Maria said.

Antae, who has autism, is focusing on the main goal of his NDIS plan — to get on top of his health in order to play a valuable part in society as he grows older.

“He’s a history buff and loves the idea of qualifying for the Cadets.”

Before accessing the NDIS, Maria says she had to be conservative when choosing supports due to cost.

“Antae is now accessing supports including a paediatrician, psychiatrist, psychologist, speech therapist, support with daily activities from an independent carer support consultant, podiatrist, continence clinic, and is getting out in the community and expanding his life skills with ‘Autism Adventures’.”

Antae and his family received assistance to apply for and implement his plan from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Beenleigh region, at the Logan office.

“I had some ideas what I thought Antae needed but I wasn’t in a position to know what he really needed. Our Local Area Coordinator, Michelle, helped structure this amazing goal-driven plan that forms the basis of our treatments and therapies.”

Maria says once their NDIS plan was accepted, she felt overwhelmed.

“A few months into our NDIS journey, Michelle noticed that I hadn’t used much of Antae’s plan at all, so she called me and we discussed options and ideas further.”

Carers Queensland can support you to find out more about the NDIS, to apply for the scheme and to help you get started with your NDIS plan.
