Augustine Bub is working towards his dream job as a counsellor with the help of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The 28-year-old, from Hemmant, who has a degenerative vision impairment, is studying a Diploma in Counselling and has a support worker assisting him with his goal.

“When you are straining your eyes it is hard to study, so once a week for six hours a support worker helps me to study and with reading,” he said.

“I am about half way through the self-paced Diploma and hope to have it done next year.”

Augustine’s support worker also assisted him with landing two new jobs recently at a health clinic and day spa.

“A support worker helped me to get my resume out there. I had a resume, but having someone help me put it out, check it and put it on other job sites helped.”

Augustine said using the skills he has obtained in his current work is a natural progression to move into counselling.

“When you are treating and interacting with clients (in my current work) you aren’t that far off from counselling. People tell their life stories to you; it goes together,” he said.

With his first baby due in December, Augustine is hopeful of finding flexible work while continuing to receive NDIS supports.

Augustine received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.

He said he is grateful to have NDIS supports as it helps him in all facets of his life.

“Before the NDIS I used to walk to the train station to go shopping then go back home. In the Brisbane summer it was so hot and wasn’t good. Now it is good as you can have someone help you.”

Carers Queensland can support you to find out more about the NDIS, to apply for funding and to help you get started with the NDIS.
