Chelsea writes up a storm

Chelsea Brook may well be the next James Cameron, if she has anything to do with it.

The 13-year-old from Coorparoo is taking her love for ‘My Little Pony’ to another level, writing new episodes with the goal to submit them to be made into TV shows.

Chelsea, who has autism, is passionate about the show watching numerous episodes on YouTube, clutching her ‘Fluttershy’ toy pony and describing every detail to her mum, Monica.

“Chelsea’s memory recall is amazing; she can remember every detail from each episode. She keeps on at me to contact the writers of the show so I need to start getting on to that. She has plenty of scripts ready to go,” Monica said.

Keeping active is also a must for Chelsea, as she and Monica attend the Parkrun at Stones Corner every Saturday morning.

Before Chelsea even thinks about putting her walking shoes on, she is assisted by a support worker funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“A support worker helps Chelsea get ready to do Parkrun each week. Chelsea walks slowly but her goal is to get further each week.”

Chelsea has also previously been recognised for her volunteering at more than 20 Parkruns.

“Chelsea loves meeting new people and being social. Attending is just a normal part of our Saturday mornings now.”

A support worker also helps Chelsea get ready for school every weekday morning.

“It makes such a big difference as a support worker is one-on-one with her for the whole morning while I can focus on getting my other two children ready for school too.”

Chelsea also receives funding for a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist, all thanks to the NDIS.

Chelsea received assistance to apply for and implement her NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.

Monica is thankful that the NDIS has come into their lives and has enabled her to return to work for the first time in 14 years.

“Being able to have choice and control over our NDIS plan is a good thing as it allows us to think about what is best for Chelsea.”

Carers Queensland can support you to find out more about the NDIS, to apply for the scheme and to help you get started with your NDIS plan.

If you’re not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can also help you identify and link to options in your community.
