Emma supported on employment journey

Emma Wiseman is developing her work experience skills to secure permanent employment with assistance from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The 24-year-old from Chandler is gaining on-the-job experience at Wynnum’s Chemist Warehouse, with a goal to receive paid employment there in the near future.

Emma’s mum, Helen, said the NDIS is supporting Emma every step of the way.

“The NDIS has allowed Emma to have supported employment which she loves and has given her confidence in this role,” Helen said.

Emma, who has Down syndrome, is also accessing NDIS supports to develop her confidence and independence with daily living to allow her to eventually live independently.

“The NDIS funded supports have allowed us to actively look for suitable accommodation that Emma will share with her friends to enjoy life independent from us.”

Emma attends physiotherapy to help her maintain a healthy lifestyle to enable her to participate in several sports, as well as speech therapy to give Emma more confidence with her oral communication.

“Emma loves spending time with her friends, participating in Special Olympic sport, specifically swimming, netball and tennis, and would one day like to make a movie; she has even already written a screen play for this.”

Emma received assistance to apply for and implement her NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.

Helen said their experience with the NDIS, their Local Area Coordinator Julie and Carers Queensland, has been extremely positive and overwhelmingly supportive.

“To us as a family, Emma is healthy and happy with her life and our job is easy knowing she is happy, confident and fulfilled.”
