Having fun proving best support for Seva

For Seva*, having fun swimming, riding horses and becoming a ‘Ninja Warrior’ has been the most effective therapy for the seven-year-old since accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Seva’s mum, Rita*, said the Eight Mile Plains local has only been accessing NDIS supports since April 2019 but is already achieving her goals of making friends and becoming more independent.

“Seva wants to maintain friendships through more social communication and resolve conflict by herself, as well as participating in group activities and understanding game rules.”

“She is also learning to take care of herself at home. Seva loves to be independent, helpful and to have fun,” Rita said.

Seva, who has autism, is now accessing speech therapy, occupational therapy focussing on life skills such as brushing her hair and maintaining her room, as well as physiotherapy to work on core strength, balance and gross motor coordination. But it’s her more active activities Seva enjoys taking part in the most.

“Seva loves to participate in ‘Ninja Warrior’ class with the help of an assistant.”

“Seva has also received physiotherapy while riding horses as part of her school program. She also receives NDIS support to participate in adaptive swimming.”

“To be honest, the most effective therapy that she has received has been part of these fun and social activities rather than a clinical approach. NDIS self-management is allowing us to choose activities that she gets a lot from.”

Seva received assistance to apply for and implement her NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.
