Jamie is working towards achieving his goal of entering the workforce, while building a strong community around him.
Supported by his family, support workers, and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding, Jamie is transforming his unit complex into an interactive community garden, which empowers him to live a healthy life.
“The community garden is keeping Jamie well and on track to achieve his goals of increasing his independence and accessing the community. The project is also designed to mimic a typical work day to prepare Jamie for work and extend his concentration,” explained Gill, Jamie’s mum.
“Gardening is contagious and people are joining him from all around the neighbourhood. When Jamie tells people about the project, they are excited to help out and he has received donations all the way from Brighton to Samford. People have donated plants, mulch bins, and other materials to support him.”
Jamie is more confident accessing the community and is learning new skills to prepare him for employment.
This is also making a huge difference to his quality of life through the introduction of vegetable gardens, which encourages him and other residents to eat healthy.
Jamie added, “I’ve been very busy learning new skills. I’ve learnt to safely use a gurney pressure washer to clean the fences, tidy up the gardens, and pave pathways and my neighbour’s patios.”
“Jamie is also learning to cook, and his support workers help him maintain his home and go about his daily activities,” Gill said.
Jamie is on the fast track to achieving his goals. When he isn’t busy in the garden, he’s enjoying football, attending a musical, at choir practice or at the Petrie Men’s Shed learning skills to prepare him for employment.
