Kellie shares her opinion on inclusive fashion

Brisbane based psychologist and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participant Kellie, first learnt about the inclusive fashion label, Christina Stephens, via a Facebook group.

Kellie, who is currently modelling for the label’s Unique Women Unique Stories Campaign, said that having an inclusive clothing range like this will enable her and others to feel more included.

“I think it will make people feel thought of. There are groups that are neglected in the fashion industry, and this might enable more people living with disability to enter the industry,” Kellie said.

“I think it’s about time. Unfortunately, in a lot of clothes, they put the zips in the back, which drives me crazy and causes issues when dressing. It might look nice, but it isn’t practical.”

Christina Stephens’ label includes adaptive and inclusive pieces, designed specifically for women living with disability, which doesn’t look like traditional clothing options.

Kellie, who has cerebral palsy and works in the employment sector, uses her NDIS funding to support her lifestyle and career.

“My plan is mostly therapy; however, I also have assistive technology included for a new wheelchair. I currently get cleaning which is great, so everything doesn’t fall on my husband to do. In the future, when we own our own home, I may request home modifications dependent on what my needs are.”

There are now more than 61,000 Queenslanders benefitting from the NDIS, and 340,000 Australians nationally, including over 134,000 people receiving supports for the first time.

The NDIS provides Australians under the age of 65, who have a permanent and significant disability, with the supports they need to live more independently and to increase their social and economic participation.

Carers Queensland is the NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community. If you have a disability and not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can help you identify and link to options for support in your community.
