Ken’s on top of the world
Whether travelling overseas or staying closer to home swimming in the local pool, Ken Foley feels on top of the world.
The Rocklea resident believes he is in control of his life for the first time since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2014.
When his doctor advised him to start living life to the fullest, Ken jumped at the chance of fulfilling his travel dreams and took out a bank loan to visit countries including Bali, Thailand, the Philippines, and India.
While travelling overseas allowed him to be independent, Ken finally began to feel like the boss of his own life once he began his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan in February.
Ken received assistance to apply for and implement his plan from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.
Ken said he now has choice and control of his NDIS plan.
“I feel I am my own boss and I have so much power now I have the NDIS helping me,” Ken said.
Ken dreams of continuing to travel and visit Europe and to return to Thailand to experience the culture again.
To do this, Ken admits he needs to build up his energy levels to be able to walk more while travelling.
With the help of his physiotherapist, Ken now frequently visits the local Mount Gravatt pool.
“The swimming pool feels great. It is an awesome feeling stretching and massaging my neck felt so good. I am very good at floating; I am kind of unsinkable.”
Ken admits receiving the NDIS has changed his life.
“It has given me more strength to have the power. It’s all my call. I feel I now have a future thanks to the NDIS.”
