Kilcoy local and Carers Queensland work together
Toby has Down syndrome, and while challenging at times, he and his family are finding their feet and working towards his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) goals.
The family moved from Bald Hills to Kilcoy two years ago. They struggled to find supports that fit Toby’s needs in the area, so they decided to get creative and reach out to their Carers Queensland Local Area Coordinator for support.
“It’s hard to find people to support Toby in Kilcoy. His previous service provider had an ageing demographic. He wasn’t enjoying his time, so we decided to not continue with them,” Toby’s mum Wendy said.
“Carers Queensland contacted us to meet at the library, and they were wonderful. They took us through step by step, explaining what the NDIS process is and how to use Toby’s plan. All of a sudden I knew what was going on.
“They also liaised with our old disability service, who used to look after Toby, and before we knew it, things started happening.
“Rick, our Local Area Coordinator came out to do our planning conversation. We then received Toby’s plan, and we met with Carers Queensland again at the library, and now we have a good idea about what’s going on,” said Wendy.
“One of Toby’s goals is to improve his reading, so we have someone come out once a week to teach him. It’s something he’s always wanted to do, and his teacher tailors his lessons to his needs. He’s getting very good and his writing has improved as well.
“The NDIS has taken a lot of worry off our shoulders and we can choose what’s best for Toby. We are so proud of him; he has improved so much. His next goal is to start swimming in summer to improve his health and fitness.”
Toby is supported by Carers Queensland, NDIS Partner in the Community for the Ipswich region. To find out more about how the NDIS and Local Area Coordination program can work for you, contact Carers Queensland on 1300 999 636, or email@example.com
