Library time with Lachlan at local school

Nambour local, Lachlan Parfitt is changing his life and getting noticed along the way, with the help of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Twenty year old Lachlan, who has Down syndrome, has been volunteering at the Blackall Range Independent School, one day a week during school term, helping out in the school library.

“My job is teaching children how to read and helping them to learn about their awesome day, and talking about animals and helping each other out,” Lachlan explained.

A science fan, Lachlan uses his library time with the children to share facts about animals and insects.

With the help of his support worker Meleni, a former teacher, Lachlan recently planned and presented a library lesson for the Prep children about parts of a book.

Lachlan, who also works part-time at a local café, puts his coffee-making skills to use at the school, taking orders, making fresh brews for the teachers and managing the money.

Lachlan’s confidence has increased as a result of his responsibilities at the school, and the respect he is shown by students and teachers.

His Mum, Terri, is pleased with the changes in Lachlan’s life since he started using his NDIS funding.

“Lachlan’s doing great,” Terri said, “he’s got the best life, doing what he wants to do.”

“He has gone from being let go from a previous job for mucking up, to now receiving awards for outstanding effort and trainee of the month with his new day program.”

“It just shows you what the NDIS funding and the extra support can do,” she said.

Lachlan is thrilled as well.

“My NDIS plan was very awesome. Thinking ahead about my life, my goal is to work here more.”
