Luke cleans up in friendships stakes
Luke Da-Rin De-Barbera is combining making friends with creating a small business.
The 17-year-old from Carindale recently established a domestic cleaning business and works with a National Disability Insurance Scheme-funded (NDIS) support worker who helps Luke clean people’s homes.
Luke’s mum Carol, said being able to combine a job and increase his social connection to a like-minded and age-appropriate support worker has given him more confidence and independence.
“It is great to see them clean together and it has given Luke his own money to buy whatever he wants at the shop. The fact that he has his own money now from cleaning has given him more independence too,” Carol said.
When Luke, who has Asperger syndrome, isn’t working he keeps busy with study and spending time in the community.
Luke attends TAFE four days a week taking part in ‘Rewire the Brain’ training, art therapy, and a literacy and numeracy program.
Once a week Luke can be found riding horses during equine therapy, and is considering undertaking work experience with horses or animals in the future.
Luke received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS plan from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.
Carol said she is full of praise for the NDIS and the opportunities and support it has given to Luke.
“For Luke it has given him more variety; he used to have to be with family all the time. Now he can spend time with his young support workers. This allows him to have more contact with peers who I trust as I know he is safe.”
