Myles Coombs moved from New South Wales to Queensland with his mother, Pam and is now enjoying being part of a community in rural Queensland  with the support of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Myles has been able to fully engage in the community and participate in many social activities every week and continues to flourish in his new home.

Myles, who has Down syndrome, loves taking part in outdoor activities like putt putt mini golf and ten pin bowling and does this with the support from his service provider.

Myles’ mum Pam, said, “He wasn’t supposed to see 12 months, he was born in Grafton and they flew him down to Sydney when he was three months old, they said he had Downs syndrome and he had a wall missing out of his heart and would be lucky to see twelve months. We proved them wrong. They said he would never walk and probably never talk but now he is 41 and he runs everywhere and he never shuts up!”

Myles was not receiving any supports before his NDIS plan and his mum, Pam had commented on how much he has changed over the last year.

“I really have noticed a big difference, he has really come out of his shell and it is great. Where he was very withdrawn before, he is more confident and social now,” Pam said.

Myles received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Toowoomba region.

Pam commented that their Local Area Coordinator, Kim was very helpful in navigating the paperwork and getting the right supports for Myles.

“It has made a big difference all round, Myles is a lot happier, he is even talking to different people now, he’ll say ‘Gidday’ to strangers.”
