NDIS supports Andrew to lead a fit and active life

Andrew is now able to maintain a fit and active lifestyle, alongside his family, after receiving National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports.

The Greenbank father received his prosthetic leg after accessing the scheme in 2018, only a few months after a motorbike accident resulted in his leg being amputated.

This support has allowed Andrew to keep doing the things he loves – camping in the great outdoors, swimming in the ocean, boating and fishing trips, and watching his sons play soccer.

“My main goals were to keep living an active lifestyle as much as possible; keeping up with my two young boys was important to me,” he said.

“I wanted to be able to keep enjoying the activities my family and I enjoyed before my accident, going on our camping trips, fishing and hiking adventures.

“Having the NDIS funding to support my goals means I can function at a higher level with my prosthetic limb.”

Andrew also accesses physiotherapy and gets support with daily living and maintaining his home.

These supports have allowed him to keep working in a similar capacity to before his accident, as well as being able to comfortably enjoy living in his home.

“I wanted to achieve and maintain my employment goals within the company I was employed, be able to remain living on the property I grew up on, and enjoy it with my kids as I had once with my parents,” he said.

“Overall, the NDIS support has been positive for me and my family and it allows us to enjoy life together and do what we love doing.”

Andrew received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.

He said his Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Dan, was helpful, pro-active and informative when applying for his NDIS plan and bringing it to life.

“He kept me up-to-date and followed up my case with the NDIA, which meant for a prompt approval for some prosthetic repairs I needed recently.”
