Niamh’s on track with NDIS

Published On: 17 September 2020Categories: News, Stories

Niamh’s goal of owning her own horse is the driving force behind her recent successful job search and building up her savings.

After handing out her resume, Niamh secured an interview with her local McDonald’s restaurant.

“Because of COVID, a lot of jobs are quite hard to get into because there’s so many people going for them,” Niamh recalled.

“It was quite normal for a first interview, really. I just went in, I took my seat and just waited for him. We just went through the basics of getting the job and everything. And from there, a few days later it was confirmed I had gotten the job.”

Fourteen year old Niamh, who has Aspergers, has been gaining more independence since receiving National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding, and becoming job-ready is just one part of her growing confidence.

“Before (the NDIS) it was just me and Mum going places. We just did normal everyday things, but only ever together. I sometimes maybe went out with a friend but that was very rare,” said Niamh.

“After a while I started wanting to be able to go shopping with my friends or with other people.”

The NDIS has helped Niamh to be able to do this through regular outings with support workers that give her the independence she and her Mum have been working towards.

With some shifts under her belt, Niamh is already looking ahead to one of her bigger goals, getting into track work, after completing her Certificate III in Horsemanship.

“I know a few people who have done track work before. It’s sort of like just going for a job, really. You just need to get in there and they’ll teach you the basics of it.”
