Opportunity knocks for tech-savvy Scott
It may be a collection of ones and zeros for some, but for Scott Hughes he is turning his passion for computers and technology into a learning experience.
The Coorparoo resident, who has been in a wheelchair for more than 12 years, has recently begun a five-month coding course through his work.
The 45-year-old has worked for Apple in Brisbane for two years and wears an Apple Watch for fall detection.
To ensure he doesn’t need to use this function of the watch, Scott stays healthy and fit by accessing physiotherapy through his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding.
“It is important for me to concentrate on getting healthier and improving my wellbeing so I access training with a physiotherapist for three days a week to help my body stay limber and in good condition.”
Scott also has funding for a cleaner, after he was hospitalised with an infection last year.
“I used to struggle to clean my place and now a cleaner comes once a fortnight.”
Scott is also keen to play a more active role in the community.
“Having a spinal injury can be isolating, so I am trying to find more time to go out and meet new people socially and maybe join a social club.”
Scott received assistance to apply for and implement his plan from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.
Local Area Coordinator, Sally Bellingham, has been supporting Scott through his NDIS journey offering additional linking supports to the community.
“The NDIS helps me ensure I have access to everything I need. My family can see I am doing better.”
Carers Queensland can support you to find out more about the NDIS, to apply for the Scheme and to help you get started with your NDIS plan.
If you’re not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can also help you identify and link to options in your community.
