Sharrena's world opens up with NDIS support

Prior to accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Sharrena’s life looked very different.  Sharrena, 48 years old, was living with her mum after undergoing surgery for brain cancer.

At the time, Sharrena was told she had only twelve months to live….that was five years ago. With NDIS supports now in place, she is able to live a much more independent and happy life.

Sharrena lives in her own unit with support workers assisting her with daily tasks including house cleaning, shopping assistance and attending appointments.

“So much more has opened up for me, I actually feel like I’m going to get somewhere, whereas before I was just living. I actually feel more positive with everything as well, there are so many wonderful services out there and people who can help you,” Sharrena said.

Shareena attends exercise physiology sessions twice a week and is working towards her goal of strengthening her legs to increase mobility to rely less on her walking aid and has a much more confident and positive outlook.

“Before, I was living with my mum. Now I have an accessible house and I love being independent. I have my dog with me and I have wonderful support workers. I couldn’t ask for anything more,  Australia is a very lucky country,” Shareena said.

Sharrena received assistance to apply for and implement her NDIS plan from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Ipswich region.

Carers Queensland can support you to find out more about the NDIS, to apply for funding and to help you get started with the NDIS.

If you have a disability but are not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can also help you identify and link to options for support in your community.
