Supporting our community to access the NDIS

Carers Queensland is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community for the Caboolture/Strathpine region.

Our Local Area Coordinators (LACs) have been working and connecting with local schools to support families to understand the NDIS, how to access the NDIS and what is available in their local community.

Carers Queensland Local Area Coordinators met with a representative from Deception Bay State School who identified a gap in parent and teacher knowledge about the NDIS.

As a result, Carers Queensland staff were invited to attend parent-teacher interviews and connect with families who had not started the access process or who were thinking about accessing the NDIS but were still unsure if it was right for them or their child.

The team set up a kiosk at the interview session and met with families who requested resources and general information about the NDIS and Carers Queensland. Word quickly spread and soon more families were requesting a face to face meeting with the team.

“Some families knew very little about the NDIS but were curious. Others knew the basics but didn’t know how to progress with the access process, and some families simply needed general support to get them started,” said Tim, a Carers Queensland Local Area Coordinator.

“Some people may not be eligible, so we help them connect with the community and other supports. Others will possibility get access, but first, need a formal diagnosis so we talked to them about that process. Others had the right documentation but needed help to take the next step.”

Carers Queensland as NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community, can help you understand the NDIS, how to access the NDIS and guide you through the planning process. They can also help you find support already available in your local community if you’re not eligible for the NDIS.

If you have a disability but are not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can also help you identify and link to options for support in your community.
