Vincent proving the benefits of the NDIS

Published On: 15 July 2019Categories: NDIS, News

Vincent Nguyen, an 11-year-old from Durack, is improving his ability to speak about his love of Lego and Thomas the Tank Engine, thanks to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Vincent, who has Down syndrome and hearing loss, joined the NDIS in October 2018 and he hasn’t looked back.

He is now receiving funding for a speech therapist one day a week who visits his primary school to help progress his speech and improve his English skills.

Vincent also undertakes a web-based program, Gemini, to increase his language, reading and social skills to improve his verbal communication.

Robyn*, a former nurse, is helping Vincent to achieve these milestones and providing support to his family. Since he was a baby, she has been by the family’s side and more recently helping them navigate the NDIS.

Robyn said before accessing the Scheme, Vincent had no supports except for what she personally provided for him.

“I have been taking Vincent one day a week after school for the last two years, helping him with the Gemini program, and taking him to educational outings like Lego Store and the Workshops Rail Museum to see Thomas the Tank Engine.”

While Vincent’s goal is to improve his speech and language skills, Robyn also has her own goal.

“My goal is to help support him to develop the skills to find a job, but the first thing we need to concentrate on is speech,” she said.

Vincent is also becoming more independent as he now has more confidence to catch the bus to and from school.

“We keep pushing on; we don’t look back, we only look forward.”

Vincent and his family received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.

Carers Queensland can support you to find out more about the NDIS, to apply for the scheme and to help you get started with your NDIS plan.

If you have a disability but are not eligible for the NDIS, Carers Queensland can also help you identify and link to options in your community.
