Age appropriate support the key for Jamie

With support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Jamie is building her confidence and her social skills.

Jamie, who has an intellectual disability, joined the NDIS in 2018, seeking to develop her communication skills, physical capacity and her independence.

Jamie, 17, is able to hire age-appropriate support workers to help her access the community, build skills and participate in social activities.

“The pool of support workers we use for Jamie are all pretty young and all such lovely ladies, and this has really worked in Jamie’s favour,” said Jamie’s mum Sandy.

“Every day we provide the support worker with a list of activities we want Jamie and her (support worker) to do and often she goes above and beyond what is even expected.”

“Jamie’s mental well-being and lifelong goals for her age are what matters and she is currently thriving with this structure of support. We could not be happier or more appreciative of the system.”

Her NDIS funding allows Jamie to attend a range of regular physical therapy appointments as well as attending an All Abilities Dancing Group and horse riding sessions.

Sandy said she had witnessed big changes in her daughter since receiving support through the NDIS.

“Jamie’s confidence has grown and her social skills have improved vastly with this incredible support. She loves hanging out with her support workers and they have become her friends and part of our family.”

“The support has been invaluable and has enabled us, as a family, to bond even closer as we have more time for each other and it has alleviated a lot of stress in our household.”

“Jamie has a 14-year-old brother and with the support worker’s assistance and support, I am able to attend a lot more of his sporting events and support him more in his early teenage years. My husband and I have also been able to do a lot more, just as a couple,” says Sandy.

Jamie is supported on her NDIS journey by Carers Queensland Senior Local Area Coordinator, Kirri.

“My experience with Carers Queensland has been incredibly positive and the service has been outstanding. When I have needed to, I have emailed or called Kirri on the odd occasion and she has always responded promptly and been very clear in her response.”
