Changing Justice Culture, Closing the Gap

Carers Queensland and Murri Court justice stakeholders are working together to provide wrap-around support for Murri Court participants with disability to get the assistance they need, enabling them to make better decisions in their life.

First Nations people are overrepresented in the criminal justice system in Australia – they are only 3% of the total population, yet 30% of Australia's prison population. A young First Nations man is more likely to go to jail than university.

Our Murri Court Partnership is:

  • Building the capacity of justice stakeholders to better identify disability and to understand how disability may contribute to an individual’s offending behaviours.
  • Supporting First Nations Murri Court participants with disability to test their eligibility for the NDIS, link them to other mainstream and community services, and assist them to access funded supports once they meet access to the Scheme.

The results of this project have been impressive, with a recidivism rate of less than 5% for Murri Court participants with a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan. This compares with a normal recidivism rate of over 70% over two years for First Nations people in the justice system.
