Sinclair puts the pieces of the puzzle together thanks to the NDIS

Reading books about trucks and trains and completing colourful puzzles has helped Sinclair May improve his speech, thanks to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports.

The 13-year-old from Cleveland is accessing a speech therapist, resulting in more vocalisation and instigating reading.

Sinclair’s dad, Jason, said since accessing the NDIS a year ago, Sinclair has gone from strength to strength.

“He is getting a book now to read; this has all come about from working with his speech therapist. He reads lots of books on big machinery, trains, big diggers and trucks.

“He also loves jigsaw puzzles with words; old fashioned ones as well as ones on the computer,” he said.

Sinclair exercises choice and control of his NDIS plan by engaging his own support team, attending his speech therapy appointments with a support worker every week.

“Sinclair has three support workers during the week, which works well. They help get Sinclair to appointments, to school and from school, and home. He then has a routine at home, like unpack his bag and have afternoon tea.”

When he is not at speech therapy, he is getting out and about in the community.

“He has an excellent team of support workers. Therefore I am not having to juggle everything myself, which has made a huge difference.”

“He may go to the library on a Tuesday, Wednesdays to the park, and Friday to chill out on the trampoline.”

Jason believes Sinclair’s improvement in reading has opened up more possibilities of what he may want to do after he finishes high school.

Sinclair received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.

Jason said the NDIS had been an excellent addition to Sinclair’s life, for which they are grateful.

“It is a godsend having this type of support.”
