Caring for a family member or friend sometimes involvesCaring for a family member or friend sometimes involves unexpected costs. In partnership with Good Shepherd Microfinance, Carers Queensland offers No Interest Loans (NILS®) up to $2000 for eligible carers on low incomes.
How does NILS® work?
It is a community-based program that gives carers access to fair, safe and affordable credit for the purchase of essential goods and services such as a white goods, medical services, vehicle expenses and much more.
When a borrower makes a repayment to a NILS® program, funds are then available as a loan for someone else in the community. This is called ‘circular community credit’ and this is a real demonstration of the community in action.
Who is eligible to apply for a NILS loan?
You can apply for a NILS loan if you:
- Are a carer
- Have a Health Care Card / Pension Card or
- Earn less than $70,000 a year before tax as a single or $100,000 before tax for couples or people with dependents
- Have lived at my current or previous address for at least 3 months
- Can show that you have a capacity to repay the loan
How much can you borrow?
Carers can borrow up to $2000.
What essential goods and services can you purchase with a NILS loan?
• Household items like fridges, washing machines, TVs and furniture
• Medical procedures, veterinary bills, and dental services
• Education essentials such as computers, textbooks, uniforms, or power tools
• Driving lessons, car repairs or registration
• Home repairs, removalist fees and some other items as requested
